  Passage One

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

Asia is feeling the cold wind of economic crisis and uncertain consumer attitudes. Suppliers and Airline and Airport operators will experience difficulties in budgeting for next year. Sales of perfume and premium whisky and brandy continue to be under pressure. Tobacco products showed some progress, but most growth was coming from the newer product categories such as chocolates and sweets, electronics and a smaller growth in jewelry sales. The ever increasing and changing range of products of the industry and the continued growth of retail outlets for travelers were key issues in the past year and showed no sign of changing in next year’s duty free goods.

The market in Asia has begun to recover since the financial crisis. However, in Europe, the elimination of tax-free sales only applies to travelers moving between the fifteen member states of the European Union. It does not apply to travelers to other regions of the world and other European Countries. Also, all military and diplomatic sales are not affected by the sales elimination. However, sales in non-member states like Norway, Switzerland and Turkey as well as those in Eastern Europe will continue to grow.

Elimination in Europe can best be described as chaotic. Retail operators have either gone their own way or tried to develop alternative approaches. Suppliers face the rounds of a new negotiation and the need to reconsider products and marketing in a new world where hopefully travel will go on growing and consumers will go on enjoying the pleasure of shopping, but there is evidence that the traveling consumer is bewildered and confused by what to believe and how to act.

  11. The trend of next year’s duty free sales will be _______________. ( )

  A. a decrease of chocolates and sweets

  12. Which of the following is NOT true? ( )

  A. The Asia market has improved after the financial crisis.

  B. Sales in the Asia market held up during the financial crisis.

  C. The prospect in Europe is good because there will be more travelers and more purchasing.

  D. The European market will not need new products and marketing.

  13. _______________ is within the mentioned fifteen countries of the European Union. ( )

  A. Norway B. Germany

  C. Switzerland D. Eastern Europe

  14. Which of the following is NOT true? ( )

  A. Elimination in Europe is in a mess.

  B. Retail operators in Europe try to find their own way out.

  C. Retail operators in Europe try to find new ways.

  D. Elimination in Europe is well organized.

  15. The elimination will cause the traveling consumer to _______________. ( )

  A. be confused about prices and whether to buy goods

  B. buy best goods

  C. experience rounds of negotiation

  D. reconsider products and marketing

  Passage Two

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

The Boeing 747-400 airplane has reached its cruising altitude of 10,000 meters and cruising speed of 900 km per hour on its way from London to Beijing. The Purser has announced that the passengers are now free to unfasten their seat belts and move around the cabin; however passengers should keep their seat belt fastened when seated.

The passenger cabin layout consists of three sections. The 747-400 is unique in having two decks; on the upper deck, behind the flight crew there is the first class section. On the lower deck, at the front, the business class section, for passengers who pay the full fare: while behind is the much larger economy section for passengers who have special cheap rate tickets.

The stewards and stewardesses―14 in all―are now busy around the galleys. A choice of drinks, followed by dinner, video entertainment including a film and finally breakfast in the morning is the order of service. Individual headphones are distributed, and these, when plugged in to the arm of the seat―give a variety of in-flight musical programs. Also in the arm of the seat are the controls for a personal reading light, fresh air control and call button.

Dinner is served on specially prepared trays, perhaps prawn cocktail, followed by a choice of roast chicken or braised steak with chocolate mousse to finish. The chicken and beef has been heated in the special microwave ovens in the galleys. It is hard to believe that a hot, three-course meal can be served while the plane is flying at this altitude and speed.

Dinner over, the cabin lights are dimmed, the blinds by the windows are drawn, the screens unfold and the film begins. Now, for the first time the cabin crew take it in turns to have a rest while the passengers watch the film or snooze dreaming of arriving in Beijing in the morning.

  16. When the plane is flying, the passengers _______________ when seated. ( )

  A. are free to walk

  B. are free to come into the flight deck

  C. are advised to fasten their seatbelts

  D. must unfasten the seatbelts

  17. The passenger cabin layout consists of three sections. They are the followings except _______________. ( )

  A. the first class B. the cockpit

  C. the business class D. the economy class

  18. During the flight, the cabin attendants should do the following except _______________.

  ( )

  A. collect the passengers passports

  B. serve the drinks

  C. serve the meals

  D. give out headsets

  19. Before the meal, the cabin attendants should heat _______________ in the ovens in the galley. ( )

  A. the chocolate mousse B. the salad

  C. the chicken and beef D. the snack

  20. During the film, the cabin attendants will _______________. ( )

  A. wake up the passengers so they don’t miss the film

  B. watch the film with the passengers

  C. have a chat in the cabin

  D. have a rest in turn

  Passage Three

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

Aircraft seat belts, like the seats, are designed to withstand sudden deceleration. Work out how to fasten and unfasten them quickly. Cabin crews check that they are fastened at takeoff and landing, and that the babies are installed in special cot-holders. Do not, unless you are well versed in them, ignore the safety demonstrations at the beginning of a flight. Learn how to put on a life jacket, and how to use the emergency oxygen masks stored above the seat or in the back of the seat in front. In each magazine pocket is a card of safety instructions in pictures. It gives the positions of the emergency exits. Each of these has a sign giving the operating instructions in one or more languages, so passengers can open them.

Fire extinguishers and sometimes axes are stowed at the cabin crew stations. Life raft are usually placed near each main exit. In wide-bodied jets, they are extensions of the escape slides, and in aircraft such as the VC10, 707 and 747 they are stored in the ceiling above the aisle. The survival, first-aid and polar kits are usually found near, perhaps attached to, the life rafts or exits. If the “fasten seat belts” signs flash on in flight, obey them quickly; the aircraft may be about to enter turbulence and passengers walking about, especially at the back, could be thrown around. Extinguish cigarettes immediately the “no smoking” signs go on. Never smoke in the cabin or toilets. Between 1946 and 1976, flight fires or smoke caused 316 accidents: many began in the toilets.

  21. Aircraft seat belts should be tied _______________. ( )

  A. when passengers feel a kind of sudden deceleration

  B. when cabin attendants show passengers how to fasten and unfasten them

  C. at takeoff and landing

  D. when babies are installed in cot-holders.

  22. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true? ( )

  A. It is not necessary for passengers to pay attention to the safety demonstrations because they are very familiar with them.

  B. In order to ensure safety, passengers with babies should put their babies inside their seat belts.

  C. You can find a card of safety instructions in letters in magazine pocket.

  D. Passengers should know where the emergency exits are.

  23. Where are fire extinguishers and axes stored? ( )

  A. near each main exit? B. at the cabin crew stations

  C. in the back cabin D. in the cockpit

  24. Why must passengers fasten their seat belts when “fasten seat belts” signs flash on during the flight? ( )

  A. Because the aircraft may approach an area of turbulence.

  B. Because according to CAAC regulation, passengers must do so.

  C. Because cabin attendants will check to see if passengers can perform correctly according to the relevant safety instruction.

  D. Because some kind of emergency is happening on board. Passengers should stay at their seats.

  25. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ( )

  A. When the “no smoking” signs go on, please give up smoking.

  B. Between 1946 and 1976, there were 316 accidents.

  C. A survey shows that most of flight fires began in the toilets.

  D. Smoking in cabin or toilets will threaten safety of the aircraft and passengers
